Standard telephone wiring is made up of three wires or conductors: black, white and red. These wires are twisted together (twisted pairs) and are color coded: black wires are referred to as the Line, white wires as the Neutral, and red wires as the Ground.
Historically, telephone wiring was separated from other wiring by use of a loose-lug ground wire to protect the telephone wiring and to provide a common reference for all other wiring in the house.
Standard Telephone Wiring
A single wire or conductor running through a conduit serves as the current carrying element of a telephone circuit.
The conductor that serves as the Line must be insulated from the White and Red conductors (Neutral and Ground) and must be connected to the Front and Rear Plugs of the telephone in order for the Line to be connected to the telephone receiver and the Line of the telephone instrument.
The line wire must be connected to the two service drops of the circuit that will feed it to the premises.
If service is provided by a buried cable, the service drop cable is connected to the Line of the circuit.
If service is provided by aerial cable, the service drop is connected to the Line of the circuit and fed back to the nearest pole.
The current carrying element of a telephone circuit is called the Line.
There may be more than one Line in a multi-wire system.
The Line is terminated by a telephone outlet, a switch outlet or a junction box.
The White and Red wires (Neutral and Ground) are bundled together for connection to the service drops and return conductor, and the White and Red wires are terminated with the Line terminal.
