As of March 2012, when the game was in development, Gearbox predicted that it would have sold around two million copies. On July 21, 2012, Alternative Games reported that TimeGate was not developing any further content for the Earthworm Jim series. According to the studio, its contractual obligation to develop further games for Sega ended with the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines.
When Gearbox took over the project, they made two changes to the storyline: the revised ending was tailored to match the new content and the final boss battle was tacked on as an afterthought. Gearbox believed that both these changes were appropriate since they make it more substantial and pay off according to the game's direction. Gearbox's dismissal of the original timeline and the meaning of the original ending was criticized by the fans as unconstitutional. Ben Abernathy, Game Informer's lead writer for Colonial Marines, felt that Colonial Marines turns the Alien mythology on its head and ruins \"what had been an intelligent and thoughtful execution.\" Abernathy felt that the ending of the game should have been more emotional and helped to justify the events that had occurred throughout the game, instead of seeing the team return to the Discovery, forget what happened, and face Ripley quite literally for the first time in over 30 years.
In-game cut scenes were removed from Colonial Marines for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions to make room for the campaign mode’s in-engine cinematics. By removing any interaction with NPCs, Gearbox was able to eliminate any pacing bottlenecks. Upon request from Gearbox, gameplay mechanics such as the ability to stun enemies, crouch, sprint and melee weapons were removed. The game also features a two-player split-screen mode, but this split-screen option was removed from the Xbox 360 version as the former split-screen function did not fully support Xbox Live features. 7211a4ac4a
